Christmas in Asia, Booked Early: Niseko Powder, Phuket Sun or a Bali Estate
Snow on a chalet roof, a calm Andaman sea or a garden in the tropical rain: very different Christmases a flight or two apart, and why every one of them is decided in the spring and summer before.
Christmas in Asia is three holidays, not one. In the north it is snow: Niseko on Hokkaido, where the powder season is getting into its stride. In Thailand it is the start of the dry months, with the Andaman calm and the light clean on Phuket’s west coast. In Bali it is the wet season, warm and green, with rain that tends to come in afternoon bursts. They are a flight or two apart through the region’s hubs, all three are at their most expensive between Christmas Eve and the first days of January, and all three are decided long before December.
Niseko first, because it books first. The season runs from December to March, and January brings the deepest, lightest powder; Christmas week sits early in the season, when the snow is still building. Most of the Niseko chalets we hold carry a seven-night minimum in their listings, which suits the trip, since a week is the natural shape of a ski Christmas, and the best ski-in houses for the festive weeks are taken six to twelve months ahead. If you want the powder and the chalet with the onsen, the time to ask is the spring before.
A Niseko chalet at Christmas is a particular pleasure for a family: boots drying by the door, dinner in after the last run, and Mount Yotei pink at dawn. Yukihyo, a five-bedroom house among birch and pine in Soga, has safe outdoor play areas and a Japanese bath; Silver Dream, a standalone five-bedroom in the St. Moritz area of Hirafu, looks across to Mount Yotei from its living room and balcony; and the HakuVillas Super Penthouse in Upper Hirafu takes sixteen in seven en-suite bedrooms, two hundred metres from the gondola.
Phuket is the warm Christmas. By late December the Andaman side of Thailand is in its dry season, with calm water, clean sunsets and the west-coast beaches at their best, and the island’s villas are in their busiest fortnight of the year. The calm north-west, from Kamala and Surin up to Natai over the Phang Nga line, suits a family; Kata Noi in the south suits the house with the view. Villa Amanzi has seven bedrooms above Kata Noi Beach, with a two-level terrace and a 15-metre infinity pool; Villa Ananda has seven bedrooms directly on the long, quiet sands of Natai.
Koh Samui keeps a different calendar. The Gulf of Thailand’s wettest weeks fall in October and November, and the weather usually settles as December goes on; by the New Year the island is into its long dry season. For a late-December stay, Inasia Beach Villa at Lipa Noi, on the west coast, is two independent villas on one beachfront property, eight bedrooms between them, looking out to the offshore Five Islands and the sunset.
Bali at Christmas is green, warm and busy. It is the wet season, with mornings often clear and rain in afternoon bursts, and the fortnight from Christmas to the first week of January is one of the island’s two peaks, when rates rise and minimum stays lengthen. For a large family, Ocean Palm Estate in Pererenan, on Canggu’s quieter western edge, is the house we would start with: seven bedrooms, each with its own bathroom and terrace, a central garden and a jade-tiled lap pool with a jetted spa pool, the estate staff there daily, and the beach about five minutes away by car. From 16 December to 10 January the minimum stay is five nights. It is booked whole, by request: we confirm the dates with the estate, then send a secure payment link.
As of 3 October 2026, the estate’s own calendar prices the festive weeks from IDR 40,000,000 a night in mid-December to IDR 60,000,000 a night from 26 December to 3 January, stepping down again after that. Rates move with the estate’s calendar, so the concierge confirms the figure for your exact dates before anything is paid.
Whichever Christmas you choose, the order is the same: fix the dates, book the house, then the flights. The large houses and the ski-in chalets are a small share of each destination’s stock and they go first; minimum stays are often longer over the festive fortnight; and a deposit, typically fifty per cent, confirms the booking. Send the desk your dates and your numbers in the spring, and December takes care of itself.

Christmas in Asia is decided in April. By November you are choosing from what is left.

Tell the concierge which Christmas you have in mind, snow, sun or a garden in the rain, with your dates and your numbers, and we will come back with the houses still free.
Good to know
Where is the best place in Asia for Christmas in a private villa or chalet?
It depends on the Christmas you want: Niseko in Japan for snow and a chalet at the start of the powder season; Phuket for the dry season on the Andaman coast; Koh Samui as the Gulf’s rains ease; Bali for a warm, green Christmas in the wet season, with the island at one of its two peaks.
When should I book a villa or chalet for Christmas?
Six to twelve months ahead for the best ski-in chalets in Niseko, and in the spring for large houses in Phuket and Bali. The festive fortnight is the busiest of the year in all three, and the largest houses go first.
Is Bali good at Christmas?
Yes, if you plan for the season. It is the wet season, with mornings often clear and rain in afternoon bursts, and the fortnight from Christmas to early January is one of the island’s two peaks. Minimum stays lengthen: at Ocean Palm Estate in Pererenan it is five nights from 16 December to 10 January.
Is there snow in Niseko at Christmas?
Niseko’s season runs from December to March and the snow builds through December, so Christmas week is usually skiable, with January bringing the deepest powder. Snow is never guaranteed on a given date, and the concierge can tell you how the season is shaping up before you travel.
What is the weather like in Phuket and Koh Samui in December?
Phuket’s Andaman coast is in its dry season from about November, with calm water and clear evenings by Christmas. Koh Samui follows the Gulf of Thailand’s calendar: its wettest weeks are October and November, and the weather usually settles as December goes on.
