The north coast — Bophut and Maenam — is the calm, green belt, minutes from the Fisherman's Village dining strip and the airport, where most of the smart hillside villas look out over the Gulf. Choeng Mon and the north-east are the polished, near-Chaweng option; lively Chaweng itself is the beach for those who want one. Pick the coast, and the right house follows.

A hillside villa above the north or west coast buys the view, the privacy and the keenest value, with the beach a short drive down; a beachfront house trades a little of that for the sand at your lawn and a barefoot week. Then match the bedrooms: two or three for a couple or small family, four or five for a family or group of friends, six and up for a multi-generational trip — and on Samui a hillside estate can even combine several villas on one hillside for a larger party.
