Start with the neighbourhood, because in Canggu the address is the holiday. Berawa is the polished, walkable heart — Atlas and the beach-club strip a few minutes away, and the shortest transfers; it is the easy, first-time-in-Canggu choice. Pererenan, just west across the river, is the calmer, greener side that Canggu regulars have quietly moved to — rice fields, a quieter beach, and the new wave of restaurants without the Berawa crush. Echo Beach and Batu Bolong sit in the middle, closest to the surf and the cafés, liveliest of all. Nelayan and the lanes around it give you rice-field quiet within a scooter-hop of everything. Pick the street first; the right house follows.

Then choose the setting. Canggu offers three, and they are genuinely different holidays. The rice-field villa — a long pool along the paddy, egrets at dawn, and a wall that turns the traffic into a rumour — is the classic Canggu house and the best value for the space. The beachfront villa is rarer and pricier: a handful of estates sit directly on the sand at Berawa, Batu Bolong and Nelayan, where you walk out of the garden onto the beach and the sunset club is a stroll away. And the riverside house, along the Pererenan and Nelayan rivers, trades the sea view for jungle quiet and a little more land. For most groups the rice-field house wins on space and calm; for a celebration on the sand, hold a beachfront estate early — there are only so many.

Match the house to the party. Canggu's sweet spot is the four- and five-bedroom villa — room for a family or a group of friends, a pool long enough to swim, a chef's kitchen, and staff who fold into the background. For a milestone trip or a multi-generational party, the six-bedroom estates give everyone a suite and a lawn for a dinner. For a couple, a two- or three-bedroom rice-field house keeps the Canggu magic at a couple's scale. Whatever the number, the point of a villa here is that the party sleeps together and the day has no closing time.
